I learned about something wonderful on Rannie's site- a band called Harry and the Potters. Two brothers (representing HP year 4 and HP year 7) in matching Potter-wear who rock songs with titles like 'Save Ginny Weasley' and 'the Wrath of Hermione.' They are coming to Los Angeles! They are playing downtown in the Central Library, how fucking cool is that? I always thought HP aesthetically and maybe a little thematically had a few indie-rock leanings so I'm glad someone has taken the logical next step.
You can learn about them on their website and also hear some songs on MySpace.
Better Read than Dead
And I finished the book a few days ago. . . here's what I thought without getting too spoiler-ish. This latest installment is I guess one of those growing-up/setting-up chapters in the grand story. I won't bore you with plot summary because honestly it seemed like. . . nothing much happens. Ron and Hermy are reduced to a niggling Greek background chorus while Harry blunders about basically as pig-headed as always. They're Waiting for Voldemort. There is a fair amount of fighting and snogging, the kids are going on 17 years old in the novel if you can believe it. The wizard world is going through some taut times and I think the subtle McCarthyism that Rowlings introduces is totally under-emphasized. What happens to the idea of 'witch hunts' when the people you're persecuting ARE witches? Who witches the wizards? (This is my play on 'Who watches the Watchers' and jesus I am going to stop hitting you, dear Reader, on the head now. Goodbye.)
